The real deal maker is when you press play on your favorite song. I remember well how my first pair of xMEMS earbuds sounded, and these were very much on par with the first Aurvana Ace. The sound was rich and buttery smooth. Sure, there is clearly some processing going on, so these won't stand up to the likes of the Beyerdynamic (which are as close to studio quality as I've experienced in an earbud), but these earbuds aren't in that price range, nor are they promoted as "studio quality." And yet, they sound glorious.

They sound good, have some useful extra features, and have a solid control app. I’d like the Mimi personalization to be slightly better, but they are otherwise a good pair of earbuds for a relatively low price that show Apple what you can do at the $130 price point.

After Mimi calibration, it’s like a veil being lifted from my music. Vocals had more presence and clarity, and bass instruments sounded more alive. I also like that it’s possible to adjust how much of the new signature you want, even select a milder or heavier version of your personal sound profile. What I like about the Mimi calibration here as opposed to most other auto-calibrations, is that it’s pretty accurate because after going through the process, I didn’t have to do much, or additional fine tuning.

You can expect plenty of detail and clarity in the highs, tight and punchy bass, as well as good audio separation. I also preferred the sound of the Aurvana Ace Mimi with active noise cancellation (ANC) enabled. The vocals just sounded more intimate.

Is the Aurvana Ace Mimi worth getting when the previous models are available at a lower price? I prefer the sound of the Aurvana Ace Mimi in LDAC codec which delivers a more uplifting treble that befits the MEMS driver characteristics. With a more controlled midrange and a tighter bass, music is a little more exciting than the Aurvana Ace 2.

The Creative Aurvana Ace Mimi is a worthy follow-up to the Aurvana Ace 2, with really good sound thanks to the xMEMS driver and the Mimi sound personalisation feature. The battery life is merely average, but the ANC and Ambient mode work well. Its S$189 asking price is therefore reasonable. Yes, you can nitpick at the materials, but consider that other "affordably-priced" flagship-class earbuds like the Nothing Ear (S$229) and LG Tone Free T90S (S$299) cost more and don't really offer much over the Creative and it's hard to come to any conclusion other than, yes, Creative has successfully given us another set of earbuds that offer tremendous bang for the buck. If you are shopping for earbuds on a budget, you must shortlist the Aurvana Ace Mimi.

The whole point about xMEMs is precision. We’re talking transient response, the ability to start and stop a sound precisely where it should. Thus, the audio will sound cleaner and more accurate to the recording which makes them great reference earbuds. This also means clean track separation. The detail retrieval on these is also quite good, picking up little details in the background shouldn’t be a problem with them. The soundstaging is decent, all the tracks are phasing properly.
